Geotechnical Challenges


  • Project site 800 feet from the active Hayward fault 

  • Geotechnically complex site with sloping ground conditions, sheared and weathered bedrock amongst areas of very hard and resistant rock

  • Alternative foundation design concepts meeting UCB's programmatic and budgetary goals

  • Use of drilled piers to avoid loading adjacent basement wall

  • Designed building superstructure to cantilever an adjacent basement
